Pink Magic: Search For Unknown in Familiar

Art and Hotels have enjoyed a long and storied history of natural bedfellows. Lomaka was invited to transform the Exhibitionist Hotel in the South Kensington into a Pink Magic emersion: it includes a neon sign plus a pink panther relief popping over doors above the unassuming guests as they walk guided by a neatly weaving pink tail to their rooms.

Inspired by the ‘Pink Magic’ series of thirteen relief sculptures, the corridor wall provides another opportunity for the artist Olga Lomaka to explore a multi-layered interface of meaning through a rich panoply of sources; from the artistic, to mass media, to the unexplained and less obvious. At the heart of this compelling series is the interplay between the masculine and feminine. The familiar is met in the form of the humorous male Pink Panther, a vehicle of association which crosses numerous media and contexts. A sense of mystery, of the magical, of something hidden within another form, is implied by this reference, obvious only upon close inspection.
